The Austral Hotel
DELIVERABLES
Established in 1873 as the Brewer’s Arms Hotel before becoming the Austral Hotel in 1904, this historic landmark located in the heart of Colac has been an icon on the city’s landscape for well over 100 years.
With new owners and a strong desire to restore the Austral Hotel to its former glory, we created a brandmark that pays respect to both the hotel’s history and its Art Nouveau inspired architecture. The A.H. monogram is based on existing ‘flared’ lettering featured prominently across the building’s façade.
Accompanying the redesign of the Austral, a full refresh and re-imagination of the nightclub ‘Hush’ located above the hotel was also completed. Renamed Ms Scarlet after the Scarlet Blaze wattle — Victoria’s Centenary of Federation floral emblem and found in the Colac Botanical Gardens. This re-envisioned logo inspires a fresh beginning for Ms Scarlet and pays respect to the era the Austral Hotel was established by subtly referencing women’s fashion during that period as well as to the history of the nightclub through the ‘hush’ finger icon.

C / D / D is located on the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to Elders both past and present, and thank them for allowing my family to learn, play and grow on the land they have nurtured for more than 65,000 years.
